Everything you need to know about getting or renewing your driver's license in NY
Requirements
- Must be at least 16 years old
- Complete a state-approved Pre-licensing Course
- Pass written test and road test
- Pass vision test
- Complete 50 hours of supervised driving (including 15 hours at night)
Required Documents
- Social Security Card
- Birth Certificate or Passport
- New York State Residency Proof (2 documents)
- Learner Permit (if applicable)
- Pre-licensing Course Certificate
- Driver Education Certificate (if completed)
Process
- Schedule an appointment at your local DMV
- Complete the Application for Driver License (Form MV-44)
- Provide required identification documents
- Pay the required fees
- Take the written test
- Complete supervised driving requirements
- Pass the road test
